As you know, we love animals. We donate a portion of the sale of each one of our hand poured soy candles to animal charities. On this 4th of July holiday, we are thinking of pet safety, not only on this day, but all summer long. Animals are counting on you to keep them safe. This holiday has a high rate of animals going missing, due to loud noises scaring them. Please take precautions such as keeping them in a quiet, secure area in your home to ensure that they feel safe.

Please be aware of the dangers listed below in the graphic from the ASPCA.

As you can see, not only are loud noises such as fireworks a danger to your pets, everyday human products such as sunscreen can be toxic to them. Indoor cats (which we HIGHLY recommend) are susceptible to getting sick from houseplants. Please check out the ASPCA’s list of plants that are not feline safe, you’ll be surprised by which ones can harm your cats.

Heat is another serious issue to consider. Pets can become dehydrated very quickly. If you are taking them outside for a walk, please make sure you bring water with you not only for yourself, but for your walking buddy too! Also while walking, remember you have shoes on; your dog does not! On a hot sunny day if the air temperature is 77 degrees, the asphalt temperature is 125 degrees! Think how hot that feels on their little feet! You can try this little trick to gauge how hot it feels. Press the back of your hand firmly against the asphalt for 7 seconds to verify it will be comfortable for your dog. Check out the ASPCA’s website for some more hot weather tips.

Please, please, please NEVER leave your dog in the car… EVER! Even if you think you will just be gone for a few minutes. Even if you crack the window, it can get up to 100 degrees in 10 short minutes if it is 85 degrees outside. In many states, owners can be (and should be) punished under anti-cruelty statutes and laws for leaving their dog in their car. You can make a commitment to your dog that you will NEVER do this by signing the hot car pledge at the ASPCA here!

While many of you are enjoying a barbecue with lots of good food, please be aware that some of it is not safe for your pets. Your pets want to be a part of any celebration with you, they just don’t know what is dangerous and what isn’t, it is up to you to keep them safe!
